Trout Trails & Tales
The Trout have found permanent habitats. At a lively auction on Saturday, August 30 all fifteen trout found new homes. Many thanks to Auctioneer Extraordinaire, Darryl Speicher, for a fun evening. Where can you find them now?
Fifteen Fabulous five-foot trout were decorated by artists, were trained about watersheds, and spent the summer sharing what they had learned about water and their relationship with people on what was called the “Trout Trail.” TOUR THE TROUT TRAIL (PDF).
On Saturday, August 30, 2008, during Stroudfest, the trout spent the day in “Stroutsburg” for one last public viewing before being auctioned at the Sherman Theatre that evening. The Catch and Keep Auction was an exciting night with an energetic crowd of folks bidding on their favorite!

Sustainability of the Pocono Creek
Trout Trails and Tales is part of a larger project called “Framework for Sustainable Watershed Management in the Pocono Creek.” Through this project, extensive studies were performed on the Pocono Creek watershed, a part of the Brodhead Creek watershed. These studies generated models and reports below. We have learned from these studies that, if we continue to develop the Pocono Creek watershed using the current zoning regulations, there will be an overall decrease in baseflows of the Pocono Creek by 31% by the time build-out is reached. Higher high flows (resulting in more frequent flooding) and lower low flows (resulting in drier stream beds) are predicted to occur.
To prevent this from occurring, changes must be made to local ordinances, implementing low-impact development and smart growth. The community needs to get involved with these decisions in addition to minimizing water consumption and pollution at home. Whether you live in the Pocono Creek Watershed or somewhere else in Monroe County, these actions will benefit you and future generations in the end. Just as trout are indicator fish for stream health, the Pocono Creek watershed study results indicate what may be the future of surrounding watersheds.
