Programs

From the beginning, the Brodhead Watershed Association adopted two complementary approaches: gathering reliable data and educating the public, believing that local science, combined with community stewardship, would ultimately protect the streams.

At the heart of BWA’s work is our volunteer-led Streamwatch – our longest-running and most consistent program. For decades, Streamwatch has provided the scientific backbone of our mission, generating reliable, long-term water-quality data through the dedication of trained community volunteers. Over the years, Streamwatch evolved from a handful of volunteers into a long-running citizen-science network, sampling dozens of sites across the watershed. This program has remained constant because healthy watersheds require consistent attention over time. This program established BWA’s reputation for data-driven advocacy and community science.

Throughout the years, other programs have naturally evolved in response to community needs, local partnerships, and available grant funding. Restoration projects, education initiatives, green infrastructure efforts, and special studies emerge when opportunities align and resources allow.

This flexible approach enables BWA to stay responsive, strategic, and effective while grounding our work in the core data and community stewardship that Streamwatch provides.
