BWA Board Member Honored

Fall, 2010

Tim Herd

Tim Herd received the Thomas P. Shelburne Environmental Leadership award at the Northeast PA Environmental Partners dinner on October 14.

Tim has been an environmental education leader for more than 30 years, helping to raise environmental awareness and reconnecting countless people to the land.

He began his career at the Somerset County (N.J.) EnvironmentalCenter as an interpretive naturalist and embarked on a life-long mission to teach environmental stewardship and collaborated with many other people and organizations to train environmental leaders.

In 1987, Tim founded the Roving Nature Center. The nation’s first fully mobile environmental education center, the RovingNatureCenter was recognized for its superior contributions to the stewardship of Pennsylvania’s public land and cultural resources.

Tim’s career led to a role as the Recycling Coordinator for the City of Bethlehem at a time when mandatory recycling became law in Pennsylvania. Under Tim’s leadership, Bethlehem was one of ten cities nationwide recognized for its recycling program by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the H.J. Heinz Co. National Recycling Awards. He also helped found the Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania, a statewide organization now celebrating 20 years of promoting and enhancing the interests of recycling in the state.

Currently, Tim is the Executive Director of the Stroud Region Open Space and Recreation Commission where he is responsible for developing and managing all open space, greenways, parks, a community center and other recreational properties of the municipal commission as well as providing direction and leadership to the Board and officers of the Commission charged with planning the community’s recreational and open space initiatives.

Tim joined the Board of the BWA for a three year term in 2009.

While his career has taken him to various jobs throughout the years, one thing remains the same: Tim’s dedication to the environment. No matter the role, his leadership in environmental education and collaborative approach to community partnerships have helped make a positive impact on the environment.
