John Riley honored at BWA Fall luncheon

John is a long-time friend of BWA.  He was President in 1996-97 and Treasurer from 1991 – 1996, and provided bookkeeping services for us during those years.  He was a charter Adopt-A-Streamsite Sponsor when the program began in 1996.  And, we have been most fortunate that John provided a home for us in his office building in Mt. Pocono.  For close to twenty years John hosted us as we grew from a “kitchen-table” group to a 400 member community organization.

John, we thank you from the bottom of our collective hearts!

Read on to learn about John’s extensive community activities in the county, the state and nation.

Life Experience:

Appointed to the PA Game Commission on January 22, 2002; served as Secretary in 2004 and the State President of the Board of Commissioners in 2005.

I am still active in the PA Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs Inc.  I have been a member since 1962 and have been active on a state level since 1968 until being appointed to the Game Commission.  I am a past state treasurer of the Federation, as well as a past state President (1989 – 1991)

I have been active for 15 years on the Monroe County Affordable Housing Board.  We are a board with public funds to encourage first time homebuyers, and senior and moderate-income housing programs.

I serve on the Executive Board of the Minsi Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  I am chairman of the Friends of Scouting dinner here in Monroe County, and we have raised in excess of $34,000.00 annually for scouting programs.  I am a past Capital Projects coordinator for Monroe County, raising funds to keep the two Scout Camps in this county in good condition.

Forty-seven year member of the Optimist Club of the Stroudsburgs, past President, I have been the Scholarship Chairman for over thirty years – two scholarships annually.  Scholarships are for four years of college, we have eight college students continually.

I am a board member of the Kettle Creek Environmental Fund for twenty years, a local environmental group, which works in conjunction with the Monroe County Conservation District to promote conservation education, especially for the elementary school children.  We sponsor a week long Conservation Camp in July of each year for 30 to 35 fourteen to eighteen year old students.

In December of 2004 I resigned my position as Chairman of the Institute for Conservation Leadership, a national organization headquartered in the Washington D.C. area with a second office in Bozeman, Montana.  This organization trains and develops leadership at the grass roots level.

I founded Riley and Company, Inc. CPAs and Business Advisors in 1969.  The firm currently has two offices with twenty staff and 5 shareholders.  I am still active in the practice on a full time basis.

In 2001 I was chosen by the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants as the recipient of the Distinguished Public Service Award.  There were twenty-three thousand CPAs in the state at that time, and I was one of nineteen finalists.  A very prestigious award, of which I am very proud.

I am a former everything.  I have been involved since before I was in my own business.   I am a former Scout Master, Little League Coach, and also was a Babe-Ruth Coach for over twelve years.  I ran an umpire clinic for several years and raised money for several new ball fields.  I am a former Hunter Education Instructor, Firearms Safety Instructor, etc.  I have served on more boards and raised more funds for more organizations than I can even remember.

Headstart Program in 1999-2000 – Chairman of Board responsible for raising $750,000.00 to purchase and renovate a new educational facility;

Burnley Workshop, a sheltered workshop for the mentally handicapped – chairman of the endowment foundation which $400,000.00 to build additions and make improvements to the facility in Snydersville;

Monroe County Public Library, I was part of the team that raised 2.3 million dollars to build a new public library.  I started an Endowment Foundation for the same library, and served on that board for six years.  I still serve on several Endowment Foundation Boards.  Currently serve on the finance committee of the Endowment Foundation.

I traveled the nation for several years prior to 1989 lecturing for the Community Associations Institute in the area of Financial Management, Budgets, Tax Seminars and in particular, Reserve Studies.  I am a past Treasurer and past President of the local chapter.

In 2004 a group of us from around the Commonwealth created Wildlife for Everyone Foundation, Inc. with our office located in State College, PA.  We have been very successful in getting the Foundation moving forward.  It is our mission to build an extensive research facility for the use of The PA Game Commission biologists, and that the complex will also serve multi-purpose environmental projects, including lecture facilities, meeting facilities, work rooms, and other environmental and conservation facilities.  This foundation’s purpose is also to augment the ability to acquire lands, to save the wildlife and their habitat, to increase environmental awareness by the educational process, and to contribute to promoting the biology and scientific approach into the future.
